Course Update 12/10/24

As mentioned in previous course updates, our PoaCure applications have had a resounding impact on the poa throughout our golf course. There are many different types of annual and perennial poa growing in the fairways. tees, and greens. After the first two applications, it was apparent that the annual types were declining rapidly and look to be fairly easy to control with this product.

This season we will be introducing year two of our poa eradication program. It will look a little different than year one and will be less intrusive on scheduling and play. This season is designed to go after the more perennial poa types that are much more resilient to weather, disease, and chemicals. Our program will consist of four applications which will again take the entire day and need to be watered in immediately. The difference this year is that two of the applications will take place as soon as we can get a sprayer on the golf course in the Spring; hopefully both applications will be finished by May 15th. The second two applications will take place beginning after Labor Day; most likely during the week of September 8th and September 22nd.

We will be facing some bare areas this Spring where poa has died off. A few of these are so large that they will be sodded. In all of the other areas we will be focusing on increased fertility and traffic management. We will be doing very little aerifying, verticutting, or any other cultural practices that would break the chemical barrier that exists on top of the soil from the PoaCure. This chemical barrier is called a pre-germination barrier and keeps the millions of viable poa seeds that exist in the soil from germinating. The end game in a couple of years is to have a healthy base of Kentucky Bluegrass and Bentgrass that can be aerified and verticut while prohibiting poa annua germination with an annual application of PoaCure.
